Enrique Veganzones (b. 1965, Madrid) is a Spanish artist who lives and works on the south-eastern coast of Spain. He studied Social Work and later Fine Arts at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, graduating with honors in painting, before pursuing advanced studies and PhD coursework in philosophy at the Universidad de Murcia. His practice is rooted in geometric abstraction and develops through a sustained attention to seriality, number, rhythm, and verticality. Working across drawing and painting, Veganzones explores the symbolic and contemplative dimensions of form, with a particular interest in what exceeds the merely visible and calls for a more intuitive mode of perception. His work often incorporates slow, traditional techniques such as stucco, gilding, and egg tempera, not as a return to the past, but as a way of engaging time, process, and the density of experience. He has presented solo exhibitions in Spain, France, and the Netherlands, and has undertaken residencies at Art House Holland, the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation’s Thread residency in Senegal, the National Trust of Georgia in Tbilisi, and the Albers Foundation in Connecticut.

Paintings 2019 - 2025
The series in egg tempera on wood emerges from a sustained inquiry into surface, light, and duration. Working with materials that are both precious and organic, and with techniques rooted in centuries of tradition, Enrique Veganzones does not seek to revive a lost language but rather to inhabit the slowness these processes demand. Each layer requires a particular quality of attention. The work advances through accumulation, through the gradual deposit of matter and meaning onto the support.
Number plays a central role, functioning not as calculation but as an intuitive ordering principle embedded in the structure of the work. Proportional relationships, among them the golden ratio, generate internal rhythms and confluences that are not planned but discovered in the process of making. Each panel is titled only by its date of completion, refusing to name what the viewer sees while binding the work to a specific moment in time.
What distinguishes this body of work is its refusal to separate method from meaning. The time embedded in the making is the time the work asks of the viewer.
Through these paintings Veganzones situates geometric abstraction at the threshold between the material and the immaterial. They are spaces where patience and the accumulated density of gesture give rise to a form of attention that is at once rigorous and receptive.Enrique Veganzones, 20210207, 2021%3Cspan%20class%3D%26%2334%3Bartist%26%2334%3B%3E%3Cstrong%3EEnrique%20Veganzones%3C/strong%3E%3C/span%3E%2C%20%3Cspan%20class%3D%26%2334%3Btitle%26%2334%3B%3E%3Cem%3E20210207%3C/em%3E%2C%202021%3C/span%3E -

Tbilisi 2024
The Tbilisi series is part of a body of research grounded in the observation of place, the memory of forms, and the way a territory can permeate a visual language. Created during an artist residency in Tbilisi in August 2024, the series draws on the sensory experience of the city, its historical density, its visible and invisible layers, and the evocative force of its architectural and symbolic signs.Composed of pencil drawings on paper, the series unfolds through a deliberately minimal formal vocabulary based on repetition, variation, and rhythm. Vertical lines, distributed according to precise modules, organize the space of each sheet and give rise to compositions in which geometric rigor and intuitive perception meet. Behind this economy of means, the work opens a broader field of resonance, where number, cadence, proportion, and verticality become vehicles for a reflection on time, space, and presence. In Tbilisi, geometry does not appear as a closed system, but rather as a way of welcoming what escapes immediate explanation. The series thus establishes a dialogue between structure and mystery, construction and inner vibration. Each drawing may be perceived as a notation, a trace, or a fragment, while the ensemble forms a continuous, almost meditative progression in which both the repetition of gesture and the sedimentation of experience can be felt.Through this body of work, Enrique Veganzones continues his exploration of geometric abstraction as a space of revelation, attention, and passage. The Tbilisi series gives form to a reflection on rhythm and stratification, while leaving open the possibility of an intimate, sensitive, and contemplative reading.Enrique Veganzones, 20240807-08, 2024%3Cspan%20class%3D%26%2334%3Bartist%26%2334%3B%3E%3Cstrong%3EEnrique%20Veganzones%3C/strong%3E%3C/span%3E%2C%20%3Cspan%20class%3D%26%2334%3Btitle%26%2334%3B%3E%3Cem%3E20240807-08%3C/em%3E%2C%202024%3C/span%3E -
Thread 2022
Inspiration arrives in unexpected ways and creation is always an adventure towards an unexplored territory. The drawings included in this portfolio are the evidence of this journey during my stay at Thread, the artist in residence program run by the Albers Foundation and Le Korsa in the remote region of Tambacounda, Senegal. With just a handful of art materials in my luggage, I arrived in Dakar with the idea of obtaining, once there, some earthy pigments, gum arabic and used paper. The handmade watercolor paste I used has resulted in a much more textured media, and the paper shows the mark of time and insects: a lack of a spotless appearance of the surface, but more contextualized for my purpose. The works revolve around the concept of the golden ratio, an ancient idea that is connected to the quest for perfection. In my drawings, this proportion is present, among other means, through a vertical golden rectangle, and in this context, it embodies my perception of the many contradictions that I perceived while in Africa. This collection of forty drawings depicts very well the inspiration and quietness of Thread.Enrique Veganzones, 20220808-03 (Thread) , 2022%3Cspan%20class%3D%26%2334%3Bartist%26%2334%3B%3E%3Cstrong%3EEnrique%20Veganzones%3C/strong%3E%3C/span%3E%2C%20%3Cspan%20class%3D%26%2334%3Btitle%26%2334%3B%3E%3Cem%3E20220808-03%20%28Thread%29%20%3C/em%3E%2C%202022%3C/span%3E -
